We have just recently migrated to exchange 2013.  It was a fresh install and wasnt upgraded from a previous version.

Our mail has been working/flowing fine as there are no real issues.  However, we have noticed that users that use OWA (internally, we dont allow external) cannot search their deleted items.

The deleted items I am talking about are the ones that were deleted from the recycle bin.

While in OWA the user right clicks their deleted items bin and picks, "recover Deleted items"  This brings up a new window with the messages they can recover.  They can recover their messages just fine; but they cannot type in a word and search.  When clicking the magnifying search glass it doesnt do anything.  Nor does hitting enter search.

Is there some feature we need to turn on?

I have also attached a screenshot and highlighted the button I am talking about in OWA.

On another Note, I have tried multiple browsers.
Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox.  All yeild same results.  The search will not work.

One thing I notice in the background of your screenshot is a certificate error.

Try using a URL which is listed in your SSL Certificate and see if that allows the search script to work.

Also, you didn't mention whether or not search works from the main mailbox -- does it?

All of our users are directed to the URL that is listed on the SSL cert.  I also tried that way as well and it does not work.

On another note, our clients are using Outlook 2010 and there is not a search function to recover deleted items in 2010 Outlook that I can see.

It is just bizarre that it is built in for OWA, but cannot find if it actually works or if other Companies have this working.

I attached a screenshot of the 2010 recover deleted items window as well.

I am just trying to find a definitive answer, does it work?  Will it work?

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

For sure it works normally.

Outlook itself has never included a search function for recovering deleted items.  Which is why OWA is preferable.

Does search work on the main mailbox page of OWA?

Yes, I also just verified that I could search through normal folders, etc...

It even drops down for Mail search and then a People search window from within OWA.

Baffling why it doesnt work when I bring up the deleted items.

So, I'm leaning towards a corrupt web page causing this problem, or something blocking the page script.

When you have the Recover Deleted Items window open, and click in the search bar, the magnifying glass icon should jump from the left to the right side of the search box, and the box should turn blue.

Does this happen for you?

When I first open the page the box is white and only has the magnifying glass on the right side.
When I put my cursor in there to start typing what I would want to search for the box does turn blue and then the magnifying glass moves one space over and a cancel 'x' button also appears.  (Shown in original screenshot attached to the question.)

If I click out of the box to scroll through messages and manually search the box goes back to white and the 'x' goes away.

I would agree that the script to search isnt working as it doesnt appear to do anything when I click the magnifying glass.

However, I am not quite sure what to do to fix this for our users.

A quick step to try would be to recreate the OWA virtual directories.

Check out this post for how to do that:  http://exchangeonline.in/re-create-owa-virtual-directory-exchange-2013/

Also be sure to have all the latest updates and patches applied.

Might be a tough thing to do considering our company and amount of users .  This might not be approved to even try this if the directory was broken during a fresh install.  Appreciate the ideas.  I was hoping for more along the lines of something wasnt configured, turned on, etc...  The issue might be insignificant enough since our full version of Outlook doesnt have this that we might not try and fix for now.  Would be best to do after hours.

Have you yourself done this before?  Is there a chance something can go wrong when it re-creates?  We have alot of users dependent on OWA and cannot have email down.

We are up to date on latest patches as well.

I will propose this to the team and see what happens.  I will take that as the answer as it would seem this might fix it.

Thanks Jeff.

It will definitely take OWA down for just a bit, but I've restored OWA virtual directories many times without incident.
