pip install fails for pandas

Hi,

I've successfully installed python packages using pip on windows 7 (64 bit) in the command shell.  However, I tried to install pandas but get the following error:

distutils.errors.DistutilsError: Setup script exited with error: Unable to find vcvarsall.bat

I remember having this problem in the last few years some time, but I don't remember the solution.  I think the issue is that I just installed Matlab, which installed a version of MS Visual C++ redistributable. I now have version 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2012 (32 and 64 bit versions of all but 2005).

Somehow I think vc++ is causing an issue.

Anyone know a solution?

pandas seems to be a package, that contains C source code.
Thus installing it requires a C/C++ compiler (Visual Studio / MingW) on your machine.

RThe visualC runtime dlls will not be sufficient.

You might either search on pypi for a binary installer. download it and install an already compiled version or try to install a compiler, all other required dependencies and give it a shot.

Compiling python packages under windows is mostly quite painful.

I've had this problem before and fixed it without having to download an executable.  It's preferable to fix it for all potential problems and not just get around it for one case.  However, I don't have time to mess with it now so I'll have to live with the executable.
Thanks.
