Does anyone know of an app for a phone off any brand that will send its gps position to an ip address. I would really like to be able to add some custom variables to the data string sent such as the name of the person carrying the phone. Id also like to be able to turn the data feed on and off to save money.

Thanks very much in advance

There are many GIS systems out there even open source ones.

The question is what phone OS to target and which information you need.

You can event use SMS to transmit GPS and additional data to ????

What is the intention of your question?

The intent of the question is to find a portable piece of hardware that will simply send the gps position string and not interpret it and display it any way. I want it to send the data to an IP address. I have a tcp/ip server that will read the data.

The phone can be any OS. I'm not bothered. I want the phone to send a text string of the GPS position of the phone to an IP address. I have a tcp/ip server that will read the data. I dont want to pay for an application that displays the gps data on a web page. I just want the application to send the gps data at intervals i specify. I also want to be able to start and stop the application

Your question becomes clearer.

You may automate such tasks (if you are not a developer) with Tasker for Android ( You can send SMS to control the device, set vars or initiate other tasks. One task could be a "get-GPS-location and send to server" periodic task. I already used it to send GPS via SMS on a specific SMS received.

There is a similar app called Scripting for Android that enables you to write scripts in various script languages (python, javascript etc):
