NETBIOS browsing over RRAS.

I have a Windows 2008 SBS server in our office. We just replaced a dead one with this and have RRAS running for remote clients to access our network via PPTP. The clients can access the network Ok - they can do RUN "\\workstationname" or RUN "\\servername" to see shares on different computers and different servers.

The issue is that none of them can browse the network by clicking the Network icon in Windows Explorer. (All machines are Win 7 Pro). I think there's a NETBIOS issue here with the VPN because it works just fine inside the office.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

You can set up a WINS server, and provide that in DHCP and RRAS IP Pool (if manually managed).
Or make sure the DNS server is replaced. That again requires that you use the "remote gateway" of the PPTP connection, and that again will redirect all internet traffic thru PPTP for the connected client.

Check with SBS BPA. It will tell you if you have network /DNS issues and explain how to fix them.

Hope that helps,

We solved the problem by switching to CIsco VPN clients and a Cisco router. It's working without issue now.

Selected own comment because we could not get the other options to work.
