I bought an otg adaptor to use with my Samsung 7.0 galaxy tab 3 but it does recognise it? do I need to install drivers? how do I get it working?

You don't need drivers for USB. But there might be firmware issues.

Try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.usbhostdiagnostics&hl=en and see if it detects any problems.
