Software to extract/view .exe installer

Hi Experts,
I'm wanting to extract the contents of an installer (.exe file) and view the contents and more importantly the code behind it. Is this possible, and is this illegal?
We had a little internal application written by a staff member who has now left our employ, and we wanting to see if we can get this utility working again.
Many thanks in advance.

If it was written by a staff member at work, then it 'belongs' to the company so it would be legal.  If it is an 'exe', it is likely to be mostly binary and not something you can easily decipher.  If you have it installed on a machine, you can go look at it there to see if you can make sense out of it.

good point Dave, that kinda of solves the legalities issues I was concerned with...
I will try and make sense of it on an installed machine.
