fibre channel tape library to windows 2008 server, no lun assigned

I have a win 2008 r2 server with an HP ae311a (qlogic 2460 I believe) connected to a hp 200e switch, and an msl6000 with a e1200-320 and an e1200-160 connected to the switch.

Qconvergeconsole (qlogic gui config software) see's both e1200's.   But I'm not able to get either of the e1200's to create a lun on the server so that windows will see the scsi controllers and ultimately the tape drives and library.

I've tried port mode auto sense and N_port, qconverge see's the e1200 in either case but no lun listed.   I haven't messed with hard al_pa.   I've factory reset both e1200.  after any changes on the e1200's they've been rebooted.  I've rebooted the server also, even though after changing the e1200 qconverge tells me somethings changed would you like to refresh.  but still no lun's.

Hba and both e1200 are at the latest version.  Haven't updated firmware in switch because it sounded like I had to do something with dos.

Any suggestions to get the lun's would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You won't see LUNs but you should see the tape drives in Device Manager in Windows if everything is set up correctly.

In the QLogic BIOS, go to Selectable Boot Settings - you should be able to see the SCSI IDs of the tape drives and library controller here. If you can't, then the most likely cause of your problem is that you need to configure zoning on your HP200E switch. If you can see the SCSI IDs, then you should be able to see the tape devices in Device Manager.

Qlogic bios cli screen shot.
switch cli of zoneshow, alishow and cfgshow
So the boot device settings was a no go.   I do have a zone, even though I don't have a clue how to create one other then to add the three WWN's into it, create an alia, zone and cfg.  Enable the config.  rebooted everything no joy.

The reason I'm thinking a lun is needed is I had one on the e1200-160.  When the lun was listed in qconverge console, there was a generic scsi controller in my device manager.  I couldn't find a driver for it anywhere.   HP had the Library and tape tools as the driver, so I installed it and if found the e1200-160 with an old firmware.  Logically I upgraded the firmware to the latest level.  After which no more lun, HP_LTT can't see it anymore and neither can device manager.   So I'm assuming there's some setting that needs to happen so that a lun can get assigned to the devices listed under the port on the hba in the server.

qconverge console

Ah - OK. So the issue occurred after you did the firmware upgrade of the tape library with the storage router - is that correct?

So yes - the storage router does present up a SCSI tape device as a LUN so that's OK. What may have happened is the storage router got changed by the firmware upgrade. Can you get into the storage router console? You should be able to point a web browser to it - more information is here: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.BINARYPORTLET/public/kb/docDisplay/resource.process/?javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.rid_ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01=docDisplayResURL&javax.portlet.rst_ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01=wsrp-resourceState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-lpg29075-1%257CdocLocale%253Den_US&javax.portlet.tpst=ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01_ws_BI&ac.admitted=1391053144685.876444892.199480143

Sorry about the ridiculous URL...  Take a look at page 54 of the manual, then can you grab a screen capture of the Ports menu and post it here?

Bingo. Port Mode is set to Autosense. Soft AL_PA. Click on the FC port in the GUI and change it to N_Port

Sorry - no idea on the override username and password. The only thing I can find in the documentation is root/password is the default.

Bummer that didn't change anything.   Rebooted everything after changing the e1200's also.

Since the server (qlogic hba) can see the two e1200's (WWN, serial #'s, models, etc) I don't think there's a problem with zoning or anything on the switch.  I don't think there's anything on the server either, because...   Prior to the firmware update on the e1200's I had a lun and the generic scsi controller visible on the server.   So what else might have changed on the e1200's with the new firmware that needs to be "changed back"?

I know I'm stuck on the LUN being the issue, but looking at the discovery page on the e1200s the luns for the tape drives and controller are all zero.

Thanks

You're right - the LUN *is* the issue - that's what the storage router does - it presents SCSI tape devices as LUNs. So now we just have to work out what the issue is (I'm familiar with the storage routers from years ago, but my memory is rusty. Haven't seen one in yonks)

What happens when you click on the discovery Go button?

I get the screen shot from the previous post.   IE it shows the two scsi tape drives. on two separate bus's with different targets but the same lun.

Is the mapping menu have something to do with mapping devices to luns?

Could you go to the Mapping menu and post screenshots for SCSI Bus 0 and SCSI Bus 1 please?

Edit... Ooops  :-)

Success, yeah.   Here's what I needed to do on the two e1200s.  In the mapping menu, change select map to port 0 device map and hit the edit button.  Create an entry for each device with it's on FC Lun (one e1200 will have 3 entries the other two (four tape drives and a library).  Close out and select the hosts in the list provided and edit.  change the map name from the default indexed to port 0 device map.   Then hit the Activate mapping and save button, no reboot required.

On the server refresh the host/hba in the qlogic console and there she be..   Five luns waiting to be used.   Went into device manager scanned the server and now have medium changer devices and tape drives.

Thanks for your help.

Just a though - it shouldn't have changed but check that Target Persistent Binding is still configured in the QLogic Management console. Persistent Binding ensures that the tape device mapping remain consistent in Windows across reboots.
