The Shared Workbook feature of Excel is known to corrupt files occasionally when they are edited by multiple people at the same time. For this reason, Excel help forums around the world recommend not using that feature.

As a more robust alternative, Excel Web App offers a reliable ability for multiple users to edit a file at the same time. To use this feature, store your file on SkyDrive or a SharePoint 2010 server (just like described in abailey101's link for Word documents). http://blogs.office.com/2010/01/21/updated-collaborative-editing-using-the-excel-web-app/ "Updated!
