UBB Board's latest version is 7.5.8

Hi experts,

This will be a strange question/statement, but I am looking for information so I came here. I am the admin of a UBB board but basically just do a lot of housekeeping, watch for spammers and keep people in line. I can do a lot within the CP, but I certainly can't install a new version.

I belong to another board which is a group of UBB owners and operators who get and share a lot of information on UBB. So, it is a UBB board for people who own UBBs.

As such, there is the owner/admin and a few others on the board who are wizards at UBB. Installing a new version is nothing and, in fact, I have had my last two versions installed for a minimum amount of money. Besides having the latest version in anything, there is a particularly bad bug right now that is fixed by 7.5.8.

Making it more difficult is that the two people I have used have turned out to not be the easiest to work with and, therefore, I don't work with them. It's too bad, because one of them could do anything. Once, there was a hack of the board, which, of course, caused quite a stir as a good many users had their emails stolen, which should have been encrypted in the first place. Any way, this just seemed to enrage the admin from the other board who, rather than help, just continued to call us stupid so I stopped dealing with him. He made a comment to me, which was that you can go ahead and make me a user and I can make myself an admin any way. I don't see how as you can't access the control panel as a user, but I deleted his account just the same.

Making things tougher is the fact that that our host admin doesn't seem to be very adept at these things as he should be the one taking care of updates.

So, my questions are can someone who is extremely knowledgeable and adept with UBB be able to make himself an admin? (I just don't think so). And, are there people out there that are capable of updating a version for a board (and of course there are), who would for a price do something like that. Or do you think they just wouldn't be comfortable working on someone else's board.

Thanks.

Bert

How wedded are you to UBB?  It seems to have drifted off the island in favor of things like phpBB or vBulletin.

But that said, this organization might be able to help you and the prices look very modest.  Apparently they also offer hosting.

Full disclosure: I have never used UBBCentral, nor have I used UBB.  I believe that anyone who could admin a UBB Board could readily learn to install and update the software.  But for only $100, if I could get expert help, I would get it now and consider learning the installation process at my leisure.

Thanks Ray,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I was away for a bit.

You have given very good information.

First, I am not wedded by the company we use is, so our user board will always be on not only UBB but UBBCentral.

I could learn how to install the software except I do not have access to the server. I am the board admin and ensure things run smoothly, e.g. spam, obscene posts, add forums, etc. The host admin has access to the server and everything to do with the board and control panel is the one who would have to do this. I don't think he even logs onto the board at all.

I have contacted him and the company but, so far, they have not done anything. The last two upgrades were done by admins from other boards, and I actually paid for it myself.

The link you gave me is actually the UBB board I frequent to gain information and get help with the board. Much like coming here. But, it is incredibly ironic that your link brought me to the same board. Certainly, $99.00 is a bargain.
