Probably stupid question here, but I can't seem to find a answer on the Internet.

Is it possible to use the RDP Client (not using the Work Resources webpage) to connect to a Session Collection on Server 2012?

Yes, it is possible.  See How To Work with RD Gateway in Windows Server 2012 that also refers you to What’s new in Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Gateway.  Note the comments regarding the RDP client in the second link.
