new software for satnav

I have a cheapo Satnav I bought sometime ago from ebay.
It has windows OS installed.

I later discovered that the iGo satnav software was pirated. I made enquires from naviextras.com if I could purchase the IGo software from them but they would not allow this.

The satnav has never lived up to expectations and it seems to be getting worse.
I wondered if there was any way I could reinstall some of the free sat nav software that is available.

I did try several but they seem to require a phone connection and apple or android OS.

I thought I could download the software and maps to my PC and load these up to the satnav via a usb cable connection.

I wondered if this is possible.

Any ideas please?
Thanks
John

On the satnav I can see an item in Settings called navigation path

I assume this is how the satnav finds the .exe file.  I cannot see any way to set that path. Any idea please?

Hi,

The amount of work you are considering with no guarantee of function is probably not worth it.  Especially when the word 'pirated' comes into play.  Also, you're probably looking at terrible battery life. Just my opinion, but I'd look at a refurbished GPS with lifetime maps.  I've seen them going for under $100 US.

Good Luck,

Yes I expect you are correct, it was more the 'how to do it' which interested me...

Hi,

And I thought so too!  As an exercise this will be fun.  There is a large variety of free software that is GPS aware.   I don't know what will work on your unit.  I really like USA Photomaps.  It's freeware, but I've purchased it.  I'm not sure if your unit has CE, Windows embedded, or what.  I'd also look at the Garmin and Magellan sites for Windows software.

Here is an Open Source project:

that can use a variety of maps including those from the well established:

I was just reading the OpenStreetMap article in Linux Format magazine issue 180 (Feb 2014) the other day:

I might have tome to go through it and transcribe the salient points if you are interested.

My satnav uses windows Embedded CE6.0

I saw Navfree downloaded and working on a Tablet.

On url http://navfree.com/GPSNavigation I tried to download to my main PC the software but the download button did nothing. Maybe an OS problem?

I was not sure if I can download the files to my PC and the transfer these to the satnav or if I have to download the files directly on to the satnav itself?

As this is a test only I would prefer to get a free program even if its not perfect.

Thanks for the help
John

Sorry, it looks like the link for pocketpc / ce is dead.  there are other options if you search for free pocket pc gps software a number of links show up.  But navfree looks like android/ios only these days.
