Restore corrupt database Exchange 2010 DPM 2012

I have an Exchange 2010 DAG environment. Backups are performed with DPM 2012. I want to simulate/test a recovery of a corrupt database in our lab environment.

All of the articles i have found refer to a single mailbox restore...which means the original DB is up and running without error. The database is restore to a recovery database, then the mailbox in question is extracted and restored to the existing database.

This is not what i want to do. I want to restore an entire failed database in my DAG environment. None of the articles, including the microsoft DPM 2012 administrator guide, cover the topic of restoring the failed database.

if anyone had done this, or knows of a complete doc i would appreciate it.

Basic First Wild Guess Answer - We have DAG and use DPM also. It's my understanding that in a disaster recovery, since the remote Exchange Database will be offline, the general concept is that we will go to the location with the replicated Database, and simply mount it. It is possible this will fall to me in our organization, and that is what I plan to do.

thanks for your response dalberson. If the active copy of a DB becomes corrupted on one of the servers in your DAG, it will automatically mount one of the passive copies of that DB on one of the other servers based on your activation preference. Then you can reseed the failed copy of the DB right from the management console.

What i am trying to simulate is a total loss or corruption of all copies of one DB where the only way to recover would be a full restore from DPM.

I think all i need to do is check "this database can be overwritten by a restore" in the DB properties page/maintenance tab in the EMC. And then run the restore thru the DPM console. Very simple and straightforward...unless its not...which is what I was hoping to get some feedback on before I run thru the simulation.

Doesn't look like anyone other than you and me has any further input. I am going to run thru it with the instructions i have and see how it comes out. I will post a follow up with my results and any other issues/resolutions, as well as a step by step for anyone else needing this in the future.

Follow the link below for the recovery steps in DPM.  It was very simple. (how unusual for Microsoft)

Only thing I did different in order to simulate a total DB failure, was to remove the DB copies on two of my DAG servers, then  I deleted/renamed some files from the mailbox store for the DB in question. This left me with one copy of the DB, which was unrecognizable to exchange.

I restored the DB on that server and then recreated the copies on the other two servers.

How to recover a database to its original location

   1.  On the server to which the database will be recovered, configure the target database to allow it to be overwritten by the recovered data.

      a. Go to Organization Configuration/Mailbox/Database management tab.

     b. Open properties for DB in question

     c. On Maintenance tab check the box for "this Database can be overwritten by a restore"

   2.  In DPM Administrator Console, click Recovery on the navigation bar.

   3. Using the browse functionality, select the database to recover.

   4. On the Recovery time menu, select Latest.
         ( You must select the most recent recovery point to recover the storage group to its original location)

   5.  In the Actions pane, click Recover.

   6.  The Recovery Wizard starts. The wizard options will vary depending on the version of Exchange.

    7. On the Review recovery selection page, click Next.

    8. Select Recover to original Exchange Server location, and then click Next.

    9. On the Specify recovery options page, you can select Send an e-mail when this recovery completes.

   10. On the Summary page, review the recovery settings and then click Recover.

   11. After recovery completes open the EMC on one of the exchange servers, go to Organization configuration/mailbox/database management tab and highlight the DB in question on the upper screen. click anywhere in the database copies tab in the lower screen and hit F5 to refresh. You should see one copy of the database, mounted and active on the server. (if not you will need to do further research to figure out the issue)

   12. Copy the database to the two other DAG member servers. (also known as seeding the database)

          a. make sure target servers have the same HD volume configuration/drive letter.

          b. on the EMC (same location as step 11) right click the DB and select "add mailbox database copy"

          c. Browse to the server node you want to copy to

         d. Select the activation preference

          e. click Okay/finish

13. After copy process completes refresh the database copy screen again. you should now see a second copy of the database located on the second server. it will be inactive and copy status should be "healthy".

14. repeat steps 12 and 13 to create another copy on the 3rd server.

that completes the process.
