Ah, try this: go into the properties of the HDMI device (in control panel->sound) and select from the bottom drop down "don't use this device, (disable)"

The sound is trying to go through the HDMI cable.
You will need to tell windows which sound output to use.
Go into control panel->sound  There you will be able to select which sound output device to use.
I'm not sure how to prevent it from switching again, the next time you connect the monitor... I'll look into that.

Thats not quite how it works but the idea was exactly the right one. It was selecting the Monitor as the default sound resource. Selected the laptops speakers as default and away we go. Thanks to you.
