I'm not sure how to prevent it from switching again, the next time you connect the monitor... I'll look into that.

Thats not quite how it works but the idea was exactly the right one. It was selecting the Monitor as the default sound resource. Selected the laptops speakers as default and away we go. Thanks to you.
