Microsoft Lync Office 365 subscription; users that do not have a subscription

Trying to determine if on premisses or fully cloud is a better choice for my team and Lync.

Buying a license to 365 for each user may be an option; but for now, question is how do we communicate with people outside the organization using Lync?

Do other users have to have a 365 subscription, or can they join a meeting in Lync when not in our "group"?

Lync can be configured to allow 'external' communication, i.e. with Lync clients outside of your organization and with Skype clients. You can invite anyone to an online meeting, they will still need the Lync client (or the web app). They do not need Lync subsription. Here's a quick guide:
