Wordpress Menus how to use a variable?

Greetings,
I'm looking for a way to use a variable in the menu item add of wordpress.

for adding categories to the menu, something like BASE_URL + portfolio_entries/prottfolio/
something I can just enter initially when the menu link is made.

so that I can run a test site and not have the links jump to the live site, and not have to search and replace every time I want to test something.

I've done some searching and am hopefully just missing a simple thing.

To do that, you would be using the custom link choice in the appearance > menu rather than just selecting the pages/categories and adding to the menu. So it would be much easier to just completely leave off the domain part of the url. Such as /portfolio_entries/portfolio/

No matter where the site is, those links will remain on the current domain.
