SQL Server 2012 File Tables

Trying to understand the purpose of the new feature in SQL Server 2012 called filetables.  Can this be used to centralize documentation?  For example, instead of keeping images and other types of documentation on separate workstations, can this type of documentation now be stored on the server containing the SQL Database?
