Ipod Nano 7th gen won't sync to Itunes

I have a Nano that when I plug it into the computer it shows the Ipod symbol at the top.  However, when I choose "devices" the sync is greyed out.  But it does show to "Transfer the purchased files to Itunes"

I ran diagnostics and it fails on the "sync" diagnostics.  I've reset the Ipod.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes.  So far nothing has fixed it.

I originally used Copy Trans to transfer the songs from the Ipod to the computer.

What else can I do?

The Apple Mobile software service is probably not running.  Follow the instructions in this article to completely uninstall and reinstall the iTunes software and try again
