Cant get Outlook 2013 to connect to Exchange 2010 over internet

I am trying to get Outlook 2013 to connect to Exchange 2010 on a Windows 8 tablet over the internet. Tried with the two connection methods (Exchange server and Active Sync). Do not expect latter to work with Outlook 2013 but do expect former to work.

Goal is to connect to Outlook 2013 to allow remote access over the Internet without using OWA.

Outlook itself now launched and stays on loading profile start screen before giving the message, "Outlook cannot long on" and a subsequent message that "your profile is not configured" The Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2013)  control panel does not work. Will not launch and does not give any error, meaning that the profile can't be reset or edited.

When first setting it up, various failure messages are given, ranging from server available to can't find server.

Server has valid certificate and the mail client inside Windows 8 can be configured without any problems on same tablet. Have also tried ticking connect over HTTP box in the Outlook settings, but to no avail.

Could this be a firewall configuration problem? And if so can anyone advise on the protocol and ports needed to be opened on the firewall.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for this suggestion.

I think the Outlook anywhere settings are configured in Exchange 2010. Could there be anything further to do (firewall). Or some subtleties in the set up of Outlook Anywhere?

Please test outlook anywhere setting using https://testexchangeconnectivity.com ? does it give errors ? if so, then you need to reconfigure outlook anywhere the correct way to have outlook work over the internet without issues.
