A basic sharepoint Question

Hi - this is a really basic sharepoint question. I'm thinking of sharing an excel document between a number of my users.

one will be the master copy and others will have a read only version.

The functionality I want it to have is when the master copy is updated, the changes are passed through automatically to the read only copies.

Is this possible, and if so what is the refresh rate?

Thanks

By using SharePoint's content management features, you can do the same thing without dealing with the master copy and other copies. It uses Check In and Check Out mechanism to make document content consistent among all users.

Basically, there is only one copy per version kept on the server, only one person is allowed to check out the document (master copy in your words) for editing the content, the other users are allows to read-only the document (old content) while the document has been checked out. Once the editor finished reviewing the document, s/he checks in the document so the changes will be made in the original document (master copy), all other users will see the updated version accordingly.
