SEP 12 clients are not updating automatically due to improper VPN disconnection of the project users & system issues, If the system is unused for 5-6 hours SEP getting updated automatically, is there any way that these can be automated by the users to click a script or bat file to update SEP from the location GUP server & delete if any virus defs corrupted.

May want to recheck location awareness settings. SEP clients automatically switch from one location to another when certain pre-set conditions are met, such as Home, VPN, Office, etc. Auto Location Switching is enabled by default, but can be disabled by the admin. This is controlled from the SEPM, in the group's General Settings ("Enable Location Awareness").

The default location which is used by SEP client
-It is one of multiple locations that meet the criteria
-No location meets the criteria, and there is no blank location
-The location that matches the criteria is renamed or changed in the SEPM console
-The client reverts to the default location when it receives the new policy

Also defaults are used in case of conflict. When conflicts arise, SEP clients use an algorithm to choose a location
-Last Known: The client will use the last location if known
-Default : Location identified as default by the administrator

Likewise for location changes, the SEP client probably takes around 4 seconds as the default check location state time interval. It takes ard 30 seconds for normal location switch time, from one state to another. Any longer does render suspicions and need for support case. E.g. assuming the switch location transition to establish VPN can be from 'Off Network' to 'On Network' and then switch from 'Off Network' to 'VPN'. The switch normally around 30sec and after checking at 4sec intervals.

If the PC is assigned a new IP address based on the location and SEP is not identifying it for some time, then see if you can create a case with Symantec. It may require quite some troubleshooting.
