Hello,

I have a client who has a Dell PowerVault NF100. They had one person come in before and use a partition editing software on their server and now it won't boot. It is in a raid 5 with 3 500GB Drives in it. It uses a PERC 5/i raid controller.

I am having an issue about getting the raid to rebuild itself. I don't know if there is a process of taking all of the disks offline before the rebuild option becomes available but I'm trying to restore it without wiping the operating system. I have it backing up now with an image backup ensure data safety, but I would like to avoid re installing the operating system.

Thank you in advance

So, is one drive failed?  Two?  Or is the no-boot situation caused by this "person" who used a partition editor on it?

Have you tried booting to the 2003 media and running Recovery Console to attempt to repair?

It is because of this "person" they had come in and used the partition editor. None of the  drives have failed, they still looked good. I can get a copy of server 2003 and try to boot off of it and do a repair that way.

Do you think that would be the best course of action?

At this point, yes ... if the hardware "appears" sound, I would want to first make sure that Window is intact, and second see if it is a simple repair that is needed - perhaps the MBR or boot sector was screwed up by the partition editor.
