My Sonicwall NSA 240 is preventing me from download .dat files.
What exact rules should I be looking at?

The .dat file is being downloading from a website so it's over port 80.
And the LAN to WAN traffic is set to...
Source ANY
Destination ANY
Service ANY
Action ALLOW

Did you check the security services specially content filter and antispyware services in sonicwall. Are they enabled.

Antivirus was enabled. I disabled it and tried to download the file. It worked.
I've now re-enabled AV and added the server ip to the exclusion list.

The file is a sophos binaries update for our AV!

To my knowledge, sonicwall antivirus enforcement only works on kaspersky and now Mcafee. If you are using any other antivirus solutions on client, its better to disable the sonicwalls antivirus protection

What is the firmware version, is that 5.9
