How can we add popup comments when the cursor touches a field in a Word Fillin Template?

We have a word template and would like popup "comments" to appear when the cursor rolls over certain field or upon clicking certain fields.  EXAMPLE: In a field that requires the user to enter a color.  When the field is clicked or the cursor rolls over the field, a comment type box appears somewhere on the screen with information such as:
****************************************************************************
THE COLOR ENTERED MUST BE BLUE, GREEN, OR RED ONLY
****************************************************************************
This will assist the user in determining what to enter without the need of reading pages of instructions.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Set a hyperlink on the field with your text and a null target

Thanks Chris for your prompt reply.  I have attached a sample MS Word 2010 template which is similar to the actual one that we use.  Personal data has been removed.  The template is locked with no password.  There are three types of entry boxes: "Click here to enter text", "Click here to enter a date" and "Chose an Item".  The last one is a pull down.  We would like a small box or a statement to pop up giving the user a little additional information to aid in completing the form.  All other areas are locked.  The form may be unlocked using the "Developer", "Restrict Editing" buttons.

I tried to select the "Hyperlink" and place a statement but had no luck.

Please tell me what order I should follow and where I should place the additional information.  It probably needs to be unlocked to enter the data and the hyperlink.  I have locked the template but removed the password.

Thanks.

Unlock the document
Add a bookmark for your field.
Select the bookmark and hyperlink (ctrl + K)
'place in this document' ... selecting your bookmark
Add screen tip text (button) as required to be displayed
Complete the hyperlink and reprotect the document

You should now have a hyperlink with rollover text as entered displayed above the ctrl + click to follow and which does nothing to the document screen if the link is control clicked

Thank you Chris.  I followed your instructions and it seemed to work well.  I found that I needed to choose the heading next to the entry box and not the box itself.  If I placed the bookmark on the entry box, it did not work.  Placing it on the heading did work.

At the bottom of the information is "Ctrl+Click to Follow Link".  Can that be removed?  I was able to remove the underline and change the color back to black.  However, If someone does a Ctrl-Click, the Heading turns purple and I can not return it to its original color.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi again,

I was able to return the bookmark to black by re-clicking the screen tip text (button) then pressing OK.

I would , if possible, like to remove the "Ctrl+Click to follow link" statement.

Can the type color for the screen tip text be changed.  If it were a color such as red or if it were bold, I think the ...follow link... statement would be ignored.

The text seems to be unavoidable since the mechanism is a fiddle I need to consider colour options and will get back

Thank you.  So far I have decided to make my message ALL CAPS.  This has helped because it dominates and the ...follow link... statement grabs less attention.

If you find out how to change the color of the message of make it bold, I will be happy.  I am satisfied with the results that I am getting now.

Thanks for your assistance.  I will close this thread and award you the points after I hear from you.

Sorry about the delay.

Removal of the control enter text I cannot find, changing the tip text to bold can be done and in thoery so can color of font BUT I haven't been able to make the latter bit work but for your information the font change bit is as follows:

Display Desktop Properties menu, Right-click on the desktop then select Properties
On the Appearance tab select 'tooltip' from the dropdown.
Select font size, color, bold/italic as required - noting my experience that font color might not work.

Note the ctrl enter fixed text is already bold so bold on its own might not help, with a bit of luck though color will work for you.

Thanks again Chris.

It is working well and the management is very pleased.  They have just added some things that they would like and I believe that the new project must be in something like Access rather than MS Word because of Word limitations.

This project is now completed and everyone is happy.

Thank you for your assistance.
