I have a Windows server 2008 R2 DC that is producing the follow error message when I run backup of the systems state.

"VSS: The writer failed due to an error that most likely would occur if another snapshot is created(NTDS)(Specific GetWriterStatus)(Snapshot continued) "

I ran the VSSDdmin list writers command and the NTDS writer is in a failed state. I re-register the dll files and reboot the server which fix the NTDS Writer.

Run a vssadmin list shadows

If there are stale snapshots, delete them.

vssadmin delete * (or the name of the snap)
