Outlook 2011 for Mac very slow...

I have a relatively new client who uses all Mac products in their environment.  One of the higher-ups uses a pretty beefy iMac (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD).  His Outlook 2011 is responding very slow (eg:  takes 10-15 seconds for new email message window to appear, characters take about 5-10 to appear after typing, etc.).  His e-mail identity is setup as follows:  6 active e-mail accounts, 8 sets of folders in the On My Computer.  I have backed up and rebuilt his identity, made sure all e-mail account settings were correct and all On My Computer folders were accessible, but still the slowness persists.  Short of starting with a new identity, is there anything else I can try or am missing?

Thanks!

@eoinosullivan - using the tools you suggested (specifically the Activity Monitor) gave a lot more insight into what was going on; Outlook was consuming between 90-100% of the CPU resources.  The results convinced me that his identity is in fact corrupt beyond.  I setup a secondary identity and the monitored results were much more inline with expectations.

Thanks a million for the tips!
