Using the document feeder on Xerox Documate 515 a vertical line is showing on the scanned document.

Wheras, placed on flat screen and scanned no line is present.

Have cleaned rollers and everything I can find and the problem in not resolved.

Have tried removing the document feeder for additional cleaning and haven't figured out how to remove it.

Hi,

I'm not familiar with the Xerox, but in most of the scanners I've used there is a thin glass strip where the paper feeds into the scanning section, usually inside a small panel in the lid.  Clean that with an alcohol wipe or windex (or whatever the user manual recommends, but I usually use alcohol wipes) and it should get rid of the line.

Hope this helps...

Xerox also should have that piece of glass so I agree that is the first place to look.

Is the line just along an edge?  If so then another possibility is that the feeder guides are off center. You may be able to adjust them.

I found the user manual at http://www.xeroxscanners.com/downloads/Manuals/DM515/DM515_Guide.OT4.EN.pdf and it looks like page 77 is what you'd need.

When you use your sheet feeder to scan a document a dot on the thin narrow strip of glass will appear as a vertical line going down the page. Clean that narrow strip and the line will go away. What happens is the when scanning via document feeder the scanner is stationary while the paper moves across the scanner. so a dot on the narrow strip of glass will appear as a line going down the page. The reason that little spec of dirt blocks the scanned light and as the paper moves across the scanner that dot stays in the same place causing a line to go down the page. When you place a document flat on the glass, the scanner is what moves while the paper is stationary, if there is a spec of dirt on this glass that spec would be a same size spec on the scanned page. It will look identical to the spec of dirt that is on the glass. So remember using the paper feeder to scan and you get a line going down the page, clean the narrow strip. If you are placing the document directly on the glass and you have a dots on the page the main glass is dirty. go ahead and clean both with glass cleaner, using a non scratching cloth such as microfiber clothes.

never spray directly on the glass but as the cleaner may seap under the seal and on the bottom of the glass where you will not be able to wipe the residue. Always spray the glass cleaner on the cloth then wipe the glass.

Nice reminder.  I have seen many TV's/monitors/etc. ruined due to spraying directly on the screen over the years.

I have completed all suggestions to this point.  Cleaned everything I can find and that has not helped.

Everything seems logical to do and yet has not accomplished removing the line and I have no indication as to why that line is there.

You did clean the narrow strip of glass right?, as this is the strip of glass that the scanner would scan to when scanning a document through the paper feeder. It may be almost impossible to see the spot on this narrow strip of glass but it is there... believe me I have had several clients who have experienced the exact same issues as you have they stated they cleaned both pieces of glass. So when I come to service the system I tried cleaning it again and the problem goes away. The lines going down the page have nothing to do with the rollers. The only thing cleaning the rollers will do is prevent the paper from getting stuck in the paperfeeder causing jams.  You are cleaning both pieces of glass the narrow strip and the larger pieces of glass. It is the narrow strip that needs to be cleaned again, unless it is scratched or pitted, or some how damaged. If the Xerox printer is under warranty get them to replace the glass. Tell them the problems you are experiencing and tell them you throughly cleaned the glass a couple times and you are still getting aline down the page. See if they can replace the glass.

Yes, it has been thoroughly cleaned and I do not see any dots/dirt that may be causing the line.  All strips and glass and plastic have been cleaned.

This is a picture of of the scanner of a different model of scanner but the most are very similar, one narrow strip of glass (1) and then one larger sheet of glass (2). It is the narrow stip that you have to vigourously clean, if after you clean this narrow piece of glasss you notice that the line down the page is thinner and lighter then you know you are on the right track and almost removed the spot on this glass. a little more elbow grease should fully remove the spot.

Here is Xerox's User guide for your scanner:

http://www.xeroxscanners.com/downloads/manuals/DM515/DM515_Guide.OT4.EN.pdf

Page 77 has a photo of the scanner showing the glass pieces.

I have clean vigoriously with alcohol wipes.  I'm with you guys and it should be gone or I should be able to see the problem - but the problem is not visual - and I've cleaned to my hearts content.

I've reviewed the manual also and cleaned exactly where I should be cleaning.  Just not resolving the problem.

I'm sorry, I just noticed that my post was a duplicate. Please disregard.

1. Is the line always in the exact same place?
2. Is it along one edge?
3. if so, which edge? the one at the edge of the platen or the one in the middle?
4. Is it very straight?
5. Is it on every document?
6. Is it always the full length of the page?

so when you cleaned it did the thickness of the line change or is it always the same size and darkness. I rarely seen it an issue especially if you scan it on the main glass it only shows a dot, but when you scan via document feeder you get a line down the page. Sounds like it maybe a problem with the scanner itself if the glass is clean it is clean. I am wondering but not sure how it got dirty on the bottom of the glass where you cant get at. Very strange indeed. If the line is getting worse maybe a problem with the scanner portion of the scanner. Is it still under warranty?

The line is consistent.  No it is not under warranty.  Probably 2 years old.  Cheaper to replace than to keep messing with.  It's done its job while it lasted.

Thanks to everyone for all your ideas.

Going to close this work order and move on.

Two other things to try.

1. Clean the area on the ADF that is directly over the small glass.
2. Use a credit card to scrape the glass (it won't scratch it) in case there is some you are not seeing that is stuck on the glass. It may be so small you can't see it.

Not much else can cause what you are seeing that I am aware of.

Actually, I think that web_tracker mentioned contacting Xerox in answer 39904241

"If the Xerox printer is under warranty get them to replace the glass. Tell them the problems you are experiencing and tell them you throughly cleaned the glass a couple times and you are still getting aline down the page. See if they can replace the glass. "

I believe the scanner is broken since all ideas are to clean and cleaning has not resolved the issue.

Again, thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
