We have a Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 server. It is a file server and domain controller.
Every so often (2 to 5 weeks) it reports event ID 1003 in system log. There are 2 different errors I see as shown below:

Error code 00000077, parameter1 c0000185, parameter2 c0000185, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 1daef000.
Error code 0000007a, parameter1 c06017c8, parameter2 c0000185, parameter3 c02f94e0, parameter4 29da4884.

Both errors seem to point to STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR.
I had Dell check logs and found no hardware issues. Dell suggests updating firmware and drivers.

I do not see any other error besides this event so if it is not a critical issue, I would like to avoid firmware update unless necessary.

Does anyone have any input as to what is happening and how to address this?

Thank you.

What is your disk controller and hard drive configuration?
I'd also consider memory diagnostics... MemTest
