I have an iPad 1 with the most up to date IOS which is 5.1.1
I went to the iTunes store and did a search from Dropbox, which I downloaded.
When I try to install it from iTunes on my PC it fails. No errors are displayed. When I click the INSTALL button it changes to WILL INSTALL. I click and drag the app from iTunes to my iPad screen and it does appear. I click sync and it disappears from the iPad's desktop.
I googled the problem and all the posts indicate that I need to have iOS 7. My iPad 1 cannot be upgraded past 5.1.1
How can I get dropbox or something similar installed on my iPad?

You'll need to manually download an older version of Dropbox and install it manually.  The forum describes how to do it.

Here's another forum that says the following
Apps that were downloaded directly to the iPad doesn't update itself to the last available compatible version.  However, if you select those apps in iTunes and downloaded them again in iTunes (for me it was Facebook & Dropbox) - it will attempt to download them to the iPad as well (if you've got your iPad set to sync via Wifi as well as automatically download new apps).  It will attempt to download and fail, because it stupidly tries to download the latest version for iOS7 into your old iPad 1 iOS5.1.1  Delete the "stuck" failed downloads and now re-download the those apps from the iPad Apps Store, now it will give you the choice to download the last compatible versions of those apps!
