In my (admittedly limited) experience, I find that older versions are more prone to attacks.  This makes sense; they have been "out there" longer and hackers have had more time to study them and find security holes.  I've also heard from numerous WordPress publishers who thought they were on firm ground installing plugins and themes, but they never thought to look and see if the code was safe and secure.  If you read the code and you don't understand the code, do not install the code!  If you cannot read the code, hire a professional to help you!
