The simplest way to monitor servers is to buy the manufacturer's system monitor adapter card and watch the reports via the web interface.

I disagree. the simplest way (and free) is to use the built in performance monitors.
Most OSs have some kind of performance counters. For the few that don't, there are many plugins/applications that you can install for free.

If you could advise what OS you are using I could try to be more specific.

Try nagios. It is a open source product. You can monitor your all servers.

I agree with the nagios suggestion. By far the most robust and comprehensive tool for the price!
