I have a requirement to format a cross tab report in where the null/ empty cells do not have a border.   see the current cross tab report and the desired crosstab output. The desired output would be more of a stair step

I don't see any way to conditionally display those lines.

Turn off the grid lines using Customize Style, Format Grid Lines.
Then, select a cell and set a conditional format on left, top, and right border:
IF CurrentFieldValue > 0 then crSingleLine

Note: remember to turn off the show cell margins option.

The answer you gave should work, but as always crystal reports has bugs in the Crosstab formating. there is an alligment problem in the cells.

remove the cell margins
remove margins, leave lines
remove grid lines and add borders to cell
remove grid add borders
blow up
blow up of cells
any ideas of fixing this ?

Interesting behavior!  What version of Crystal?
Perhaps try to assign a border with a white line color to the empty cells...

Very strange, white boards not necessary, I just removed the grid lines and assigned a black single line boarder. No special formulas. And it worked. It appears that the cross table does not display at all with the undefined cells.

So the solution
. Remove grid lines
. Remove cell margins
. Define a boarder
