Using custom image for selection list

I've attached a copy of the button.  I have the coding for the selection list but I want to use the attached image instead of the boring Select box.  How would I go about doing this or is it a waste of time?

Dropdowns are notoriously difficult to style cross browser.
About the best you can do is change borders, backgrounds etc.
Even the jquery plugins don't do much more than this and changing the dropdown image (but this is done by replacing the dropdown with a  list)
