WorkGroup in Samba

Initially I thought Workgroup in smb.conf should match the name of windows wokrgroup
assuming neither windows nor samba server is joined to the domain.

I have installed Samba in ubuntu, in smb.conf file where it says workgroup , I gave it the same name as my windows 7 workgroup which is named Myworkgroup.

I have created folders in Ubuntu , gave permissions , and everything worked just fine..since I can access ubuntu folders from windows 7…

Then later on I wanted to test the importance of the name workgroup , if I really need to make workgroup name of windows 7 exactly the same as the workgroup name entered in smb.conf…..so I changed the workgroup entry in smb.conf from Myworkgroup to Workgroup and left windows 7 workgroup name as it is Myworkgroup

I restarted ubuntu as well as windows 7… and still cannot see any difference…I can login to windows and browse to folders in ubuntu and created /delete files and folders….
so I wonder if the workgroup name matching whether it is required or not..

Another odd thing also was the password change…
I have changed the password for a user in ubuntu, and I tried to access ubuntu folder from windows 7 I was prompted to type user name and password , I did so with the old password not with the new one that I changed in ubuntu..and managed to access the folders….

I do not understand why this is happening this way

That Workgroup setting is not an authority setting. It merely makes the Linux server appear in Network Neighborhood for computers in the same network.

Try running your test again, and open Network Neighborhood in Windows. Do you see the Linux computer there? I'm guessing you won't.

Now I do not see the Samba server in Network neighborhood…in Windows 7
however if I type \\ipaddress of Samba server I can get to it from Windows 7

I can type the user name I created in Samba server, but with an old password and still can get in…though I have changed the password for that user in Samba...

I thought smbpasswd will sync password between Samba Server and Windows (File Access).
I changed the password for user in Samba..

in WIndows, when I try to access the files located in Samba, I get a prompt to type user name and password, so I did using user name, but old password, and still managed to have access to samba files…

do not understand why…in this case it is not secure...

smbpasswd sets/changes a Samba password, for either the local server or a remote server - but it doesn't sync anything.

Please post the smbpasswd command that you used, AND answer the following questions:

1) Are you running smbpasswd on the Samba server?
2) Which account is running smbpasswd? Yours? Root's?

Also, test the user's connection with the following command, run directly on the Samba server:
smbclient //localhost/share_name -U User_Name

Change share_name and User_Name to match your environment. The command will prompt you for the user's password. Does the new PW or old PW work?
