Could someone please explain to me how a proxy works

But more importantly, why it is necessary through a firewall

What advantage does it give

What do you do if you do not have a proxy

If you do not have a proxy you just allow all your clients to go directly to the internet.

Some advantages of having a proxy:

* Saves bandwidth by caching pages/images that people visit often.

* You can make all your clients go through the proxy to limit the number of connections through the firewall.

* You can filter the web, for example block porn sites or facebook.

You can search google and find much information about proxies.  Here is the first thing that came up on my search.  Looks good...
