Have just added a new server to my system. Was SBS 2003 with SharePoint 2007.

Now Server 2012 R2 with SP Ent 2013.

Alt Access mappings plagued me before. Have a site setup that is http://server:28333/sites etc.

Have an external .com pointing to my server with a static IP.

I went admin and tried to configure the external site to my internal through alternate mappings. Site as default and www address as internet. No go. 404 page. Any help? looked at my 2007 settings and their clues aren't really meaningful.

I do not really understand the issue, but let me tr to give a gerneric understanding.
Sharepoint access mapping tells the sharepoint, which addresses to catch and to handle by sharepoint. The underlying software is IIS. IIS gets the request for an URL and forwards all requests, which fit to a access mapping in sharepoint to sharepoint. All other requests are just ignored.

So the first step is to configure IIS to listen on the request. If http://server:28333/sites is the address, IIS has to listen on port 28333. That means you have to create a web application in sharepoint with port 28333. In sharepoint you define http://server:28333 as access mapping to tell sharepoint to take the request.

In this web application, there has to be a web site collection, witch offers content in the /sites subdirectory. So you have to create a site under the /sites folder.

The URL to access it is then http://server:28333/sites/NamOfTheSite/...
