Hi Experts,

I've been quite happily coding my new website and testing it using Firefox and Safari but until now had not tried running it in Internet Explorer  (queue groans)  as I did not think that there would be any significant difference, apparently there is.
I am using an asp:menu for navigation which is contained within my site.master and coded as follows:

<div class="clear hideSkiplink" style="background-color: #000000">
                <asp:Menu ID="NavigationMenu" runat="server" CssClass="menu"
                    EnableViewState="False" IncludeStyleBlock="False" Orientation="Horizontal"
                    BackColor="#000000" DynamicHorizontalOffset="2" Font-Names="Verdana"
                    Font-Size="0.6em" ForeColor="#7C6F57" StaticSubMenuIndent="10px">
                    <DynamicHoverStyle BackColor="#7C6F57" ForeColor="White" />
                    <DynamicMenuItemStyle HorizontalPadding="5px" VerticalPadding="2px" />
                    <DynamicMenuStyle BackColor="#F7F6F3" />
                    <DynamicSelectedStyle BackColor="#5D7B9D" />
                    <Items>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Default.aspx" Text="Home"/>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/SolutionsAndServices.aspx" Text="Services"
                            ToolTip="Solutions and Services" Value="Services"></asp:MenuItem>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/TrainingPrograms.aspx" Text="Programs"
                            Value="Programs"></asp:MenuItem>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/FAQ.aspx" Text="FAQ"
                            ToolTip="Frequently asked questions" Value="FAQ"></asp:MenuItem>
                        <asp:MenuItem Text="Personal Trainers" ToolTip="Who are we?" Value="Trainers">
                            <asp:MenuItem Text="Brussels" Value="Brussels">
                            </asp:MenuItem>
                            <asp:MenuItem Text="Leicester" Value="Leicester">
                            </asp:MenuItem>
                        </asp:MenuItem>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Account/MemberPages/MembersOnly.aspx"
                            Text="Members Area" Value="Members Area"
                            ToolTip="Click here for main members area">
                            <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Account/MemberPages/MembersOnly.aspx?ForceEdit=True"
                                Text="Update Profile" ToolTip="Update personal information"
                                Value="Update Profile"></asp:MenuItem>
                            <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Account/MemberPages/PARQ.aspx" Text="Update PARQ"
                                ToolTip="Update the answers you gave on your Physical Activity Readiness form"
                                Value="Update PARQ"></asp:MenuItem>
                            <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Account/MemberPages/UpdateEquipmentInventory.aspx"
                                Text="Update Gear" ToolTip="Update the equipment you have available"
                                Value="Update Gear"></asp:MenuItem>
                            <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Account/MemberPages/PaymentPromptDetails.aspx"
                                Text="Topup" ToolTip="Topup your Fit Franks" Value="Topup"></asp:MenuItem>
                            <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Account/MemberPages/ClientStatement.aspx"
                                Text="Statement" ToolTip="View a statement of all transactions"
                                Value="Statement"></asp:MenuItem>
                        </asp:MenuItem>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/NewsAndTips.aspx" Text="News &amp; Tips"
                            Value="NewsAndTips"/>
                        <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Legal.aspx" Text="Legal Stuff"
                            Value="Legal Stuff"></asp:MenuItem>
                    </Items>
                    <StaticHoverStyle BackColor="#7C6F57" ForeColor="White" />
                    <StaticMenuItemStyle HorizontalPadding="5px" VerticalPadding="2px" />
                    <StaticSelectedStyle BackColor="#5D7B9D" />
                </asp:Menu>
            </div>

Open in new window

The classes referred to above are shown here from my css:

/* TAB MENU
----------------------------------------------------------*/

div.hideSkiplink
{
    background-color:#3a4f63;
    width:100%;
    max-width:100%;
}

div.menu
{
    background-color:black;
    padding: 1px 0px 0px 1px;
    max-width:100%;
    font-size:small;
}

div.menu ul
{
    list-style: none;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    width: auto;
    max-width:100%;
}

div.menu ul li a, div.menu ul li a:visited
{
    background-color: black;
    border: 1px black solid;
    color: #dde4ec;
    display: block;
    line-height: 1.5em;
    padding: 4px 4px;
    text-decoration: none;
    white-space: nowrap;
    max-width:100%;
}

div.menu ul li a:hover
{
    background-color: #bfcbd6;
    color: #465c71;
    text-decoration: none;
    max-width:100%;
}

div.menu ul li a:active
{
    background-color: #465c71;
    color: #cfdbe6;
    text-decoration: none;
    max-width:100%;
}

Open in new window

Now I have stated that the Orientation in the menu should be horizontal and Firefox and Safari on iphone both respect this but Internet Explorer does not. (See Attachments)

Can someone tell me what to do to fix this so that it looks the same on both... preferably the way it already looks on Firefox as I'm quite happy with that!

Thanks, quite suprised no-one had made a comment as the asp:menu must be a common control that is used I would have thought

Hi GYMM8

I can't reproduce the issue here, don't have the same version of IE as you but it works fine in the version I do have.

Hi GYMM8,

thanks for that, it renders a little different than previously, menu is now centered on the page, but still horizontal here.
Q_28391942-Snapshot-with-full-cssTry isolating the issue, create a new page, one that does not inherit any master pages or site themes etc...; and see if the issue persists, the following is what I used, if the stand-alone page renders ok in IE, then the problem is not IE specific, would be nice to rule that one out.

So I'm guessing that this is IE11 issue then?

This is quite annoying!

Cheers

Hi Steve,
I suspect it is an IE 11 issue then.
Been putting it off for a while, got a painfully slow wireless internet connection here, but currently downloading 2.7gig of Win8.1 upgrade; remember when windows used come on a couple of floppy disks?

Recently had an issue with IE not accepting a width%, just would not apply/inherit the width as a percent, but if I put in a static width in pixels it was happy. Used IE developer tools to examine the inherited css and verify that the width was not being applied, F12 if you have the dev tools installed.

Respectfully yours,
Alan

Okay it's either incompatibility between Windows 7 and IE11 or my Sony Vaio! So no solution but I guess at least I know it will only happen to people who have this particular setup ..... but probably others!

Who was it that said:
You can please all of the browsers some of time, some of the browsers all of the time, but you can't please all of the browsers all of the time.

I am getting the same problem but only on my published web site. Ie, I preview in browser locally (Expression Web 2) and its fine in all browsers (Chrome, FireFox, IE11). When I publish and view the remote web site in the same browsers it does not look right (Chrome does not put borders around the tabs, and IE11 displays the menu vertically not horizontally). Obviously ASP.net is rendering the code differently for some reason.  Maybe it's an older ASP.net on the server?
