Trying not to change a DataGridViewCheckBoxCell?

I'm using a checkbox as a row selector for a DataGridView. When a checkbox is selected, that specific row is selected, however, I want to be able to display a message indicating that the row is selected if a user tries to click the checkbox off and keep the checkbox checked. Not sure how to accomplish this.

If the checkbox is stored (as opposed to unbound) then why not programmatically disable the checkbox once it is set/true, in the same place where your message appears?
on click event
if chk then
  msgbox ...
  chk = true
end if
