So I can edit the code, run in debug mode, be connected to the database, etc.

If it's on a remote machine, then you have to have the debug symbols (i.e. the .pdb files) deployed along with it. Then you have to install the remote debugging utility on the remote machine. It's been a while since I've done this, so you'd probably be better served by the documentation:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/y7f5zaaa.aspx
