Someone Sending Emails Using My Email Address

I have a friend, that has complained that someone is sending emails to all her contact list using her email address ( hotmail account ).

I suggested for her to change her password, which she did; but she and her contacts are still getting these emails that someone is sending from her hotmail account.

A few questions I have.

1. Is changing her password the only step she needs to take?
2.  Is there anything she should worry about, even if she changed the password?
3.  Is there anything she can do to prevent this from happening in the future?

She is really concerned about her private/personal information.
