Cannot open word files over VPN
I have an employee who is connecting to the home office via VPN to our file server (not a firewall VPN). Everything is fine except when he tries to open a word file from the server, word will not open. He cannot open word for a few minutes until it times out. If he opens word and tries to open the file from the server, it crashes word. He CAN copy the file to his desktop and open and he CAN save it to the server over the VPN. It is only opening the file over the VPN that fails.

It is very interesting. If word is not open, almost any file will open but it will take a while. a 15K word document took about 30 seconds to open but a 34K file took close to two minutes. Larger files took much longer. If word is open however, we get an error message from word that the file could not be opened.
The internet connectivity is pretty fast, abotu 25 Mbps down and 10 up.

Word 2003 I believe. I will check for add-ins

He is using Word 2003 and there are no add-ins.
Can you check if you can open a small word doc?
Do you have any performance issue with your internet connectivity
