Here is a link that compares the different flavors of Visual Studio with and without MSDN.

MSDN generally gives you access to other microsoft versions of products.  The higher the level of MSDN subscription you choose, the more microsoft products the MSDN subscription will give you access to.

MSDN is a subscription that provides a lot of extras over Visual Studio. It contains Visual Studio, but also many DVD's worth of extra stuff, such as development licenses for different versions of Windows in different languages, older development tools, extra documentation, access to the Microsoft cloud services, you name it.
