We just purchased a computer with RHES 6.4 and want to use LPRng as the print server instead of CUPS. Can anyone help with instructions to install LPRng?

We need to do this because we have special print forms created which are not directly connected to a physical printer.

What i mean - we have printer definitions:
  blue_paper
  red_paper
  white_paper

HP4100: physical printer

the user does lpr -Pblue_paper report-info.doc
to put their print file into the blue_paper queue

then the operator puts blue_paper into HP4100 and issues command
  /usr/sbin/lpc redirect blue_paper HP4100
and report-info.doc prints

Another command the operator uses in case there are files in the print queue
which are not printed yet
     /usr/sbin/lpc move HP4100 all blue_paper

Try downloading the rpm from lprng -

wget ftp://ftp.lprng.com/pub/LPRng/LPRngTool/LPRngTool-1.3.2-1.i386.rpm
yum install LPRngTool-1.3.2-1.i386.rpm

You need to remove cups-lpd and probably stop  (chjconfg off) cups as it will nor be used.

Actually cups-lpd may fit your purpose better...

The users submit print jobs throughout the day to different color paper. Only when the printer has the correct paper do i want to print those files. Can cups or cups-lpd be set up to do this?

If you use manufacturers ppd file you can select such options. It is in printer hardware, not in spooler. (It does not recognize color, but you can say that it is now yellow in tray 3)

i downloaded LPRng from sourceforge.net and used the RedHat install. It had problems recognizing the spool directories, and localhost.

I found an updated version on Archlinux but it doesn't work on RedHat.

So i guess i will have to abandon using LPRng.

Unfortunately LPRng could not work on RHES Linux 6.4
