Document Management - Publishing, Collaboration

Hi,
Would appreciate it very much if you could recommend a solution similar to e.g. Microsoft Office Server Extensions  ( OSE )  that allows for publishing, collaboration, and document management capabilities on a Web server. Ideally it should have the following features:
Browsing Web folders
Searching Web folders
Adding discussions to documents on a Web server
Managing Web subscriptions

Likely Environment To be Deployed In: Windows 2008 Server / SharePoint 2010  / Office 2010

Additional questions:
1. Is there a component within the above mentioned environment that the OSE has morphed into that could be used?
2. Where can one source for documentation on how to get started?

Thank you for the reply.  I have reviewed the features of Alfresco and indeed it is quite impressive. I am having a closer look into the discussion functionalities to see how the discussions are threaded. It will be very helpful for project members requiring to  follow through on a specific and or related topic etc.

In addition, is there an equivalent of Alfresco in SharePoint 2010? If so, how can one access it?

SharePoint does offer discussion board but if you want better functionality then you need to buy webparts from companies such as AvePoint or Bamboo Solutions.
