Yahoo Videos on Google Chrome

Hello Experts,

I have an executive who using Yahoo a lot.  He's complained about not being able to watch Yahoo videos through Google Chrome.

Already reinstalled Google Chrome and Adobe Flash V12.

In investigation I verified Adobe Flash Player is up to date (v12).  After a lot of google reading I've found the only way to get it to work is:

Go to chrome://plugins and disable Adobe Flash plugins.  Once this happens I am able to watch videos from Yahoo. I don't like this fix b/c you can't watch videos from YouTube and CNN which use Flash.

I can watch in them in IE10 and Firefox.

My default web browser is Chrome
Here is a page of a lot of yahoo video and his Chrome should play most of them, I say most of them as I also see a message on some of the video on Yahoo that this video is not supported in my country. But other than that they all play fine.

I have to say there is a lot of thumbnails
Do you realize there are also mp4  so he may require a codec installed on his computer.

The error you seem to have there is in two areas
(1) connection time out with yahoo itself
Have you run the cleanup history in his Chrome?
Click on the lines top right corner then click on history and clear all history for all time
Or click on Tools clear browsing data
His speed is not fast enough to load the video on that page clearing his history may solve that.
Could you link that page he is having problems with so I can analyse that video.
(2) conflict with two versions of flash installed. One from windows
Where you see the disable flash plugin? in Chrome? I have disable or enable Adobe Flash Player and shockwave player

Do you see two versions of adobe flash?
The flash object is inbuilt into Chrome and doesnt require installing anything else
disabling adobe flash seems an inappropiate action so make sure you have disable the correct windows adobe flash.

Yes I have tried clearing the history to resolve the issue, but no go.

In plugins tab I have the following:

Both plugins for Shockwave and Adobe Flash are enabled.  I have 12.1 for Shockwave player.

What MP4 codec are you referring to? Off Yahoo site?

The Link plays fine here  in my Chrome
Our players are different versions.
There is Adobe Flash player and Adobe Shockwave player

Try updating your shockwave player
Test here, mine says welcome, if you see nothing hold your mouse over teh grey screen and it says Adobe needs your permision. Rightclick the screen and run plugin.
Wait for the screen in the back to popup ans untick the  Include Norton scan

Try that first
close Chrome after each update or modification then test playing
Also try this>
Try the settings in control panel all control panel Items flash player
adobe flash player settings control paneldelete all local settings flash playerIf you have access to his PC please open that video URL then rightclick the screen disable hardware acceleration. If this works then it's the video drivers
dis- able hardware accelerationClose Chrome then reopen and try playing it.
Finally update his video drivers.
this is necessary as well update from the manufacturer only not microsoft please.
How did you uninstall Adobe Flash player?

I reinstalled Chrome and now have V13.0 enabled.  Updated Shockwave 12.1 by going to link you sent to me.

Went to same video right clicked and went to settings in Flash and turned off "Enabled hardware acceleration"

This is indication it's the video drivers correct?

I uninstalled Adobe flash using uninstall utility provided by Adobe.

 if it now plays and at what stage did it work?
If it plays after disabling hardware acceleration you are now using the CPU instead of the video card
when you decode or encode video you do it on the CPU.
Some video cards allow you to do this on their GPU instead, so you now have "hardware accelerated video decoding".

I find uninstalling Chrome and re installing often fixes the glitches as well.

Hi Merete,

The stage it started working was unistalling/reinstalling Chrome and going into flash settings and disabling hardware acceleration.

Thanks for your tips so far.  I'm going to try your further tips and get back to you.

Hi Merete,

The interesting thing is it works on our office network here at the office but it doesn't work at his home internet.  The provider he is using at home is Verizon and we're using Qwest Communications.

We have 100MB pipe and he has 10MB pipe at home.  The firewall he's using is Juniper SRX.

I've already done all of the following above.  Do you have any other ideas?

It is a huge page of video thumbnails on Yahoo and the original message I see is an internet problem, the error indicates his internet speed just can't load that much stuff.
and seems to time out. Reload it.
Yahoo ErrorIs it only this page or all of Yahoo?
I don't have a Yahoo account but can play the video there.
Your video link shows a loading circle and will come on after 4 secs.
These are not live streams but rather stored on their server and accessed by all Yahoo members. It could be high traffic. They remove them after a few days possibly.
Does your Executive log out of his account at home so he can access it when at work? Or vice versa log out at work so he can access it at home.
I believe he can't access his account at home if he hasn't logged out from work.
What URL is he using?
Just the Yahoo Homepage URL or a book Marked/ email URL newsletter that may have him log in automatically?
Is this a wireless connection?
Have him try using a new URL to yahoo home page itself. Not this one.

Try playing that URL in Internet Explorer copy the URL over
to confirm if it is in his system or in the browser.

They don't seem to offer much help either.
I wrote in their search FAQ>"Please check your internet connection" as per your error

To cover all basis, and a last resort  did he see any popups recently that says his flash maybe out of date

Ok.  With the advice of member it seems we have found a solution.
Here is what I did.
1. Type - chrome:plugins in your Chrome URL/address bar
2. The first plugin that was listed, for me, was
   Adobe Flash Player (2 files) - Version: 11.7.700.179 (Disabled)
   Shockwave Flash 11.7 r700
   Enable   Always allowed

   If it says Disable instead of Enable then you need to click on Disable in order to Disable it.

3. Restart your computer

That's it.  It worked.

Yes videos do play in YouTube just fine and yes we've tried disabling the plugin and rebooting the computer.  I don't like this option because if you do this YouTube videos will not play.

I've noticed a pattern that if you go to screen.yahoo.com the videos play but if you go to news.yahoo.com or gma.yahoo.com they don't play.  

He doesn't log out of his laptop (it goes into hibernation mode).  My understanding is that he doesn't have Yahoo account.

I'd say it is simply lag Greggor25, the fact youtube plays confirms it.
That is also flash.
Yahoo is heavy on the system resources and pulls a bit of bandwidth at load.
I agree it shouldn't be necessary to disable the flash or shockwave.
Also it is only some videos. If he reloads the pages does it eventually play?
The error doesn't show a problem rather loss of network.
Does he get the same problem using a different browser?
 IE?
Is he on a wireless?
Try a speed test, I use this one

Note what time of day is the busiest
These days we need a fast dsl speed and I even notice drop offs at around 7 pm my time. As we go to night but the world wakes up on the other side.

The problem is the video never plays. (IE and Chrome)

Speed test 8.5Mbps Down and 9.17 Mbps Up.  Yes he is running on wireless.

Ok lets try a few simple things, test playing after each.
Open your system control panel, and open the Flash Player
ln the first tab select delete all
Verify that the "Delete All Site Data and Settings" checkbox is checked and click the "Delete Data" button
delete all Flash PlayerIE.
On a page where the video is not starting hold CTRL and press F5 to try and force the video to start.
If that does not work please reboot the computer.
As soon as it begins to boot keep tapping the F8 key.
When presented with the safe mode option choose safe mode with networking.
Once in safe mode with networking try to watch the video.
If it works then we know some software is blocking it.
Which anti virus software does he have?
If it is AVG
uninstall it and re-install it as I have read adding yahoo to the exceptions in AVG doesn't fix the Yahoo video video wont play.
But uninstalling it re-installing does.

We believe we might have found the issue.  The videos play fine our ISP and various ISPs.  We believe something is wrong with the access point on their network.  We are seeing about getting it replaced.

Very good Greggor25, at first I thought that doesn't make sense
They play ok in Chrome once you reinstalled it
so how does that gel with access point denied and Chrome?
It likes Chrome but not Internet Explorer.
There is a security flash risk atm so if I may I suggest to you to use only Chrome ..
I recently had to format the other computer here because of flash update required popup and it ran across all browsers. Replacing the router and malware scans have fixed everything.

What if you run a ping cmd.
Go to your start orb run type in cmd press enter
in the run type ipconfig /all
Using traceroute and ping to troubleshoot connectivity problems.

Yes it was as simple as adding the extension.  It's shame as big as Yahoo is they have poor back end code written look for http on https page.
