Sharepoint training template

We are trying to use the SP 2010 training wsp given out free by MS. The site seems to work just fine - However the workflow generated emails (for attendee registration) get sent out as blank emails.
We can see the workflow has very detailed variables setup for mail delivery but anything associated w/a variable does not work.
We can edit the workflow mail and deliver plain text or items from the 'current item' but nothing else.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Do you mean the training template (part of the fab 40 templates) that were given out with sharepoint 2007 (not 2010)?
If so then these are unsupported with Sharepoint 2010 and it is better to look at building your own from scratch or seeking out a 3rd party alternative.
