Cannot open Word template from taskbar MRU list

In Windows 8.1 I find the following odd behavior:

I have Microsoft Word 365 pinned to the taskbar.
I right-click Word in the taskbar and hover to a template (*.dotx) file in the MRU list.
I right-click the template file shortcut and choose Open (rather than New) from its context menu.
Word opens a new document, rather than the template.

This is the behavior I would expect if I simply clicked the MRU item, or if I chose Open from the context menu.

When Word is pinned to the Start8 menu (rather than to the taskbar), the above works as expected. Removing Start8 does not affect the error described above.

This is important, because the Open item is the main way to edit the template file itself, rather than creating a new Word document.

Thanks for any help or explanation.

Well what should that be? Very obviously a bug. Tell Microsoft so they can fix it.

Thanks, McKnife. It might be a bug, or it might be a misconfiguration of my file associations or a scrambled file somewhere. I think I'll hang on a bit to see if anyone can say whether they see the same behavior. Meanwhile I'll follow your advice.

Correction: I will try to follow your advice about reporting this as a bug to MS. There is no obvious way to do that that I can find. Do you have a suggestion about how I can do as you suggest?

If you have a support contract or your office package or windows have end user support that is not expired, contact them via website. If not, use a technet forum and ask people to reproduce the steps.

Sorry, I would use our MSDN contract, I don't have links.
