We are developing a Windows app in c# using Windows Sql Express 2013 that will run in a 10 user Windows Workgroup The office and budget is too small for a domain and server.

The database will reside on it’s own dedicated Win7 box. At some time in the future, if we see the db is growing to capacity, what’s the safest manner of upgrading to full sql and can it be done on Win 7 pro?

safest: backup the databases, install the full sql aside as dedicated instance, and restore the databases (and any server-side stuff like logins, linked servers etc ...) on that new instance. once you confirmed that all is working fine, you can uninstall that express instance.

Hey,

You can easily migrate Sql Express to SQL Server.

When installing Workgroup or Standard it will upgrade the database server and the databases at the same time. Make sure you have a backup of your database (just in case). You can always backup the database and restore it to Workgroup or Standard as well.
