Apple have advised you correctly .. the RAM on the MacBook Air is actually soldered to the motherboard at the time of manufacture and CANNOT be upgraded.

The compact nature of the Air means that Apple decided that it was too difficult to make the RAM replaceable and it should have been made clear to you at time of purchase in the specification.

If it was a purchase in the last few days you might have case for a return but after 6 months I'm afraid you are stuck with the MacBook Air in its current configuration.
