Crystal Reports XI max

So I have a field that I am attempting to sort based on max but it gets a little tricky so asking for some input...

The field data looks like -
17p123e234-401
17p123e234-401A
17p123e234-401M
17p122f4321-505
17p122f4321-505B
17p122f4321-505R

What I am attempting to do is group by the digits before the hyphen then find the max based on the max digits to the right of the hyphen... so I end up with

17p123e234-401M
17p122f4321-505R

as the groups....

I did maximum but it took the max for the total and left me with 1 item lol

Group_By formula: Split({your_field}, "-")[1]

Formula to find Max of: Split({your_field}, "-")[2]

When I attempt to put the split into the Group Expert like this
Split({FS_CustomerItem.CustomerItemNumber}, "-")[1]

it tells me there must be a constant in the place of

{FS_CustomerItem.CustomerItemNumber}
