Rebooting modems and switches

Hi
I often get called by customers because of slow access, be it within a LAN or with their internet access.
Generally the first thing I do, after analyzing the situation, is to reboot the switch or ADSL modem.
More often than not this fixes things.
My question is, why do these two types of devices in particular require a reboot.
Is it memory saturation ?
Cheap and therefore bad quality ?
If this is such a necessity, why didn't the manufacturers include the possibility of scheduling a reboot ?
Is there a way to automate, even remotely, this reboot ?
I've looked at timer power adapters, but none can be programmed beyond one week.
Worst case I could program the devices to reboot every Sunday morning, early enough to be discreet.
Any ideas ?
Thanks
Yann
